Today, I’d like to introduce you to one of my best blogging friends, Kathy Hester from Healthy Slow Cooking. Kathy has generously written a guest post for me as I continue to recover, and I am so appreciative! As a bonus, the recipe she is sharing is for easy vegan pasta chips–a perfect snack to add to your game day spread. Among other things, Kathy is a prolific cookbook author, and her latest is all about recipes to make in your air fryer. I’ll let Kathy take it from here!

I am so pleased that Jenni invited me to share a recipe with you all. In case you have no idea who I am, I’m Kathy Hester, the blogger behind HealthySlowCooking.com and the author of a bunch of vegan cookbooks. (See Kathy’s author page on Amazon)

My latest cookbook, (affiliate) Vegan Cooking In Your Air Fryer, just came out this month so I thought I’d share a recipe from it. If you don’t have an air fryer, you can cook it in your oven – it will just take longer. Also, if you are using your oven and it has a convection feature be sure to turn that on.

(First, Kathy answers some of your air fryer questions. She is very helpful and approachable!)

What the Heck Is an Air Fryer?

An air fryer is actually similar to a convection oven. Warm air is blown all around the food to keep the temperature steady from all directions, similar to the way food is heated during deep-frying. In your air fryer, the heating element is above the food and the fan is above that.

There are many different brands, models and sizes of air fryers, and the prices vary accordingly.

Most of the fryers have baskets that look similar to the fry baskets you’ve seen used in hot oil frying.

Do I Have To Use Oil?

The short answer is no. You can make almost all of the recipes without added oil. The longer answer is that some foods have a better texture when you add a spritz of oil before cooking.

Does Food Really Taste the Same as Fried?

Not exactly, because the cooking method is closer to baking. But it goes beyond the almost crispy oven fries you’ve tried before and have not been happy with. It’s a dry method of cooking, so you may notice that battered foods are a little dry. A few spritzes of oil will take care of that.

Food will brown and get crisp and crunchy—plus you can bake normally unfried foods in your air fryer as well. You’ll see this with corn on the cob, roasted tomatillo salsa and even dried tomatoes.

How Do I Pick the Right Air Fryer for Me?

Air fryers come in a wide variety of sizes, models and brands, so it can be confusing at first. To make matters worse, some fryers list capacity in quarts and others in pounds.

The first thing to consider is the number of people you regularly cook for, then see what’s available in your budget. Air fryer brands and models can vary by more than $100 dollars!

If you cook for only one or two, opt for a smaller (and usually less expensive) model like a (affiliate) GoWISE 3.7 quart. If you have a larger family get an extra large instead.

Here are four more air fryers at different price points for you to consider:

Kathy’s Italian-Seasoned Easy Vegan Pasta Chips

AIR FRYER BOW TIE PASTA CHIPS

(gluten-free option*, soy-free} This is such a cute snack and a nice change of pace from pretzels and chips. The pasta crisps up and the flavors remind me a little of an Italian-style cheese cracker.

  • 2 cups (152 g) dry whole wheat or white bow tie pasta (*use brown rice pasta to make it
  • gluten-free)
  • 1 tbsp (15 ml) olive oil or aquafaba to keep it oil free
  • 1 tbsp (7 g) nutritional yeast
  • 1 1/2 tsp (3 g) Italian Seasoning Blend
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  1. Cook the pasta for 1/2 the time called for on the package. Toss the drained pasta
  2. with the olive oil or aquafaba, nutritional yeast, Italian seasoning, and salt.
  3. Place about half of the mixture in your air fryer basket if yours is small; larger ones may be able to do cook in one batch.

  4. Cook on 390°F (200°C) for 5 minutes. Shake the basket and cook 3 to 5 minutes more or until crunchy.

These bow tie pasta chips will crisp up more as they cool.

How delicious do this little vegan crunchies look? So good, right?! I think you’ll really enjoy these air fried pasta chips. I like that I can choose whether to use oil or not. I’m absolutely using the oil, but if you follow a no added oil eating plan, aquafaba is your new best friend!
